Aerogel | The Ultimate Thermal Insulation Material

Aerogel is a lightweight, porous solid material obtained by replacing the liquid inside a hydrogel (wet gel) with air without changing its volume.

Aerogels possess nanoscale pores with a porosity exceeding 95% and a density as low as 3 kg/m², making them extremely lightweight solid materials. The pore size of aerogels is approximately 20-50 nm, smaller than the mean free path of air molecules, achieving a near-vacuum insulation effect. Furthermore, at room temperature, the thermal conductivity of aerogels is only 1/3 to 1/5 that of traditional insulation materials, and it changes only slightly with increasing temperature, making it an ideal solid material for thermal insulation and flame retardancy.
