Reaching the "Mount Everest of Science and Technology"! China Energy Engineering Corporation's Compressed Gas Storage Artificial Chamber Technology Sets Five World Records

On August 17th, China Energy Engineering Corporation's independently developed world's largest artificial chamber gas storage in-situ test platform successfully completed a gas storage sealing and circulation test, breaking the world's highest pressure level of 18 MPa. This marks the successful verification of the complete set of technologies and simultaneously set five world records: chamber size, pressure, pressure difference, gas loss rate, and stability. This achievement overcomes the global challenges of safety and economy in high-pressure, multi-media, and long-cycle gas storage in artificial chambers, successfully reaching the summit of technological advancement.

Located in Wangcheng, Hunan Province, this test platform, constructed and operated by China Energy Engineering Corporation (CEEC) Digital Technology Group, is currently the world's largest and most technologically advanced in-situ artificial chamber testing base. The platform boasts two ultra-large test tunnels with a maximum burial depth of 110 meters and a maximum design pressure of 20 MPa. It possesses the world's only "dual-tunnel synchronous high-pressure testing capability," ranking first globally in both scale and parameters. Construction began in December 2022, and the platform officially commenced operation in August 2024.

CEEC Digital Technology Group, in collaboration with Yangtze River Design Group and Wanhua Energy Conservation Group, has achieved groundbreaking research and development, resulting in eight pioneering achievements, including a "rigid-flexible composite sealing system," "surrounding rock bearing capacity theory," "full-domain temperature field data acquisition," and "high-pressure air state observation," all possessing 100% independent intellectual property rights.

This significant breakthrough not only fully opens up my country's artificial chamber gas storage technology route, accelerating the large-scale and industrialized process of compressed gas energy storage, but also pioneers a "four-high integrated" (high economy, high reliability, high construction efficiency, and high operational controllability) spatial development paradigm for deep underground resource utilization, adapting to ultra-high pressure and large fluctuation conditions. It paves a new path for technological innovation to drive industrial innovation and compressed gas energy storage to support the construction of a new energy system. This technology can be extended to the storage of strategic materials such as hydrogen, natural gas, ammonia, and oil and gas, providing cross-domain support for the integration of "source, grid, load, and storage" and the development of the hydrogen energy industry with its "multi-energy simultaneous storage" capability, demonstrating China Energy Engineering Corporation's mission and responsibility in leading energy technology transformation and ensuring national energy security.
